Field notes from a musical life
These are songs I’ve helped shape — with my hands, my ears, and the people I’ve been lucky to make music with. Some are polished, some are raw. All of them are part of the path.
Hi, I’m David.
I’m a multi-instrumentalist and teacher who believes playing music can feel like remembering something ancient — not learning something new.
I started on banjo in my late teens and never looked back.
Since then, I’ve fallen in love with guitar, bass, mandolin, and more — not because I studied theory, but because I followed sound. I’ve spent years touring, teaching, recording, and sitting with instruments until they started talking back.

The way I teach is simple:
You listen. You play. You repeat what feels good. It’s about trust — in your body, your instincts, your ears. I’m not here to throw charts at you. I’m here to help you discover a kind of musical relationship that’s alive and nourishing.
This site is a home for that.
It’s for anyone who wants to learn music by ear and by heart — not by rulebook. Whether you’re picking up an instrument for the first time or circling back after years away, you’re welcome here.
